One is free software you host; the other is a polished service you subscribe to. Both watch a page and tell you when it changes, and the trade between them is the familiar one — control and cost against convenience.

Which should you choose?
changedetection.io if you are comfortable with Docker, want unlimited watches for the price of a small server, and would like the option of running a browser and your own proxy to reach sites that block datacentre traffic. Visualping if you want it to work in five minutes with nothing to maintain, and your pages are readable by a cloud service. The self-hosted route is genuinely cheaper at volume and genuinely more work.

changedetection.io is free to licence and costs a server plus your time. Visualping charges per check. At a handful of pages the subscription wins on effort; at a hundred the self-hosted option wins on money.

A tick in a table hides most of the difference. This is what each row is really saying.
This is the whole trade. changedetection.io in a container gives you unlimited watches for the cost of a small VPS, and nobody can change your pricing. It also makes you responsible for updates, backups and the browser container — and for noticing when it has quietly stopped.
Many modern pages build their content with JavaScript, so a plain fetch sees an empty shell. Visualping renders as part of the service. changedetection.io can too, but you run the browser container yourself, which is more moving parts and more memory.
The quiet advantage of self-hosting. Large retailers reject datacentre traffic, and a cloud checker cannot get around that. Running changedetection.io with your own residential proxy is one of the few ways to watch those pages reliably — and it is work.
Visualping is click-and-select, which anyone can use. changedetection.io supports CSS selectors and XPath, which is more precise and assumes you are comfortable reading page markup. Precision here is what stops a rotating banner triggering a daily false alarm.
changedetection.io uses Apprise, which reaches a very long list of destinations. Visualping covers the common ones with less configuration. As ever, the count matters less than whether the one place your team looks is covered.
Neither watches uptime, certificates, domains or cron jobs. If you need those too, that is another subscription — which is the argument for keeping every check type on a single allowance.
This category lives or dies on whether the tool can read your specific URLs. Put your three hardest pages into Visualping's free tier before assuming a subscription solves it.
Under ten, the subscription almost certainly wins on effort. Over fifty, the self-hosted option is dramatically cheaper and the maintenance starts to look reasonable.
If your pages need JavaScript rendering, self-hosting means running and sizing a browser alongside. That is the part people underestimate, and it is where the memory goes.
A page watched every five minutes is over eight thousand checks a month; hourly is seven hundred. On a metered service that is the difference between plans, and on your own server it is the difference between comfortable and not.
You are comfortable with Docker, want unlimited watches for the price of a small server, and may need your own proxy to reach sites that reject cloud checkers.
You want it working immediately with nothing to maintain, and the pages you watch are readable by a hosted service.
We are a hosted service, so changedetection.io beats us on cost at volume and on reaching blocked sites when you point it through your own proxy — that is a real advantage and we will not pretend otherwise. What we add is scope: page watching sits on the same allowance as uptime, SSL expiry, domain expiry, API checks and cron heartbeats, so a team needing more than change detection is not running two products.
Uptime, SSL expiry, domain expiry, API checks, cron heartbeats and page-change watching all draw on one allowance here, rather than being separate products or separate bills.
Start freeThe free plan sends to one email address. Every paid plan adds the chat and webhook channels below, with 2 to 10 destinations depending on the plan. However many alerts you receive, the price does not change — nothing here is metered or charged per alert.
There are no voice calls and no SMS. If a phone call at 3am is a hard requirement, say so before you subscribe — we would rather tell you now than refund you later.
The software is, under an Apache 2.0 licence, with no watch limits. Running it is not: a small VPS, the updates, the backups, and a browser container if your pages need JavaScript. At volume it is still much cheaper.
changedetection.io, if you route it through your own proxy — that is the only reliable way to read a site that rejects datacentre traffic, and no hosted service can offer it. Out of the box, without a proxy, both struggle equally.
Only if the pages you watch build their content with JavaScript. A plain fetch is enough for a great many sites and far lighter. Try without it first and add it when a page comes back empty.
Visualping, by a wide margin — paste a URL and click the region. changedetection.io is a container, a volume, probably a second container for the browser, and CSS selectors. That gap is the honest headline.
By check, not by page. A single page watched every five minutes uses over eight thousand checks a month; the same page hourly uses about seven hundred. Choosing the interval is usually more important than choosing the plan.
No. Both are change detection only. If you also need to know a site is up or a certificate is about to expire, that is a separate tool and a separate bill.
